Capital ·

The tenth anniversary of Astana — the utopian capital city Kazakhstan's first president built on the steppe — observed at the moment between dream and disenchantment.

Synopsis ·

In 2008, Kazakhstan's capital Astana turned ten years old. Built from scratch in the middle of the steppe by President Nursultan Nazarbayev, the city was a piece of monumental futurology — a mirror in which the regime tried to see itself succeeding. Capital is a meditation on that mirror, and the people who live inside it.
